Subject: | [amigactive] MY new toy ... |
Hello, All
well you lot have been talking about your new toys I shall mention mine. My
EZkey XS. I thought I'd mention this as there might still be one or two out
there using miggy's and not very happy with their conventional PC kbd adapters.
Anyway Fitting was relatively easy except you do need to push it down onto the
chip quite firmly. I musn't have done this properly as when I went to switch my
miggy on in the evening the hard-drive wouldn't boot (despite having tested
everything that morning). However it was soon fixed with a good push using a
screwdriver as I couldn't quite reach all the edges. The first thing I noticed
was how much more responsive the keyboard was and how multipress was comletely
supported. Throughout yesterday I explored the functions of the keyboard.
Of course all kbd adapters are slightly diffrent and map the various PC
keys to various locations, some more sensibly than others. The EZ key seems good
and sensible in most cases to me and it has 4 Keymaps that are hardcoded into
the chip so theres something there for all keyboards and tastes. You can scroll
through the keymaps using the pause key on the PC kbd. By default the standard
keymap suits most modern PC Kbds. The ctrl key is the Ctrl key windows are
windows. the menu key flicks through open screens wich I thought was quite a
good feature. Insert is Help and Page up/down are supported by being mapped to
shift down as is home and End. F11 and F12 are mapped to numberpad ( ). This
means that at least in Opus you could use these as custom keys as those brackets
aren't used much anyway. The only quirk I found was with the number pad. In some
programs ie. the shell and GoldEd the numberpad defaults to the alternate
functions like left right Home etc. But in other programs they function
correctly as number keys. Though the Curser functions can be overridden by
holding either the Ctrl or Shift key. Another problem I encountered comes in if
you don't have one of the plugins that are supported by the EZKey. The EZkey
also supports switching to ATX power supplys and switching between RTG and SD/FF
output. (Using EZVGA and *Mon) So if you start one of these the Computer just
hangs. Still Its not too difficult to access these functions accidently as they
are all accessed by the LAmiga RAmiga combinations. Another good feature and
apparently unique to the EZKey is the abilty to press a key during bootup to
disable Accelerators. However this only seems to work from a cold boot. So my
verdict is a good investment even if it is a little expensive. Especially
considering that most people will only buy it for the basic ked functions and
not all the other gubbins like IR support and such. Thank you for listening :)
Regards
Out of my mind. Back in five minutes.
